The last few days are the tale of two cities. Two days ago it was sunny and warm, water was 60+ degrees and we were scratching for wind. Now its 47 degrees, water is 51, and it’s blowing 15-18 knots (18-21 mph). We have moved out of the pacific high and into the northern pacific. We are about 550 miles south of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island - home of the crab fishery from that deadliest catch show. Current destination is the fuel outpost on Adak Island. Distance to the channel west of Adak is 846 nm. Hopefully arrive next Thursday.
Been a great couple of days. Continued to test heavy weather gear and get the boat ready. Deployed the warp yesterday - a line and chain dragged behind the boat to slow it down in large and heavy waves. We repaired a bunch of things - for example one of the stanchions got bent in due to poor work by the yard. Rebedded and screwed it into the backing plate. Tested the storm trysail as well as stowing the cockpit canopy, some items for really heavy days.
Food is awesome. Caught 3 yellowfin tuna over the last few days. Lots of sushi, tuna pasta, tuna po-boys, tuna mac, tuna fried rice..you get the idea. Also nachos, churros, pot roast, even pork belly. No one is losing weight…
Lots in the water, both good and bad. Passed a full on shipping container yesterday, fortunately when it was light. Pretty scary as the fall off ships and just barely float. Last hour we had a 30 foot whale swimming with us, a first for me as they usually ignore us.
Been navigating our way along. Measuring distance the old fashion way - with a taffrail log. Basically a distance meter that drags a rotor. The meter is calibrated to the turns of the rotor. Only differed 10 nm’s over 250 nm’s. Pretty cool! Been amazing so far. Great crew. Everyone is super mellow, positive and excited. 18 days in and all good!
MORE TO COME!
