We got it all done today. Grocery shopping, four 15 gallon diesel trips to the gas station to buy fuel (and not go to the very challenging fuel dock designed for large vessels…), restock on alcohol, checking the propeller and repairing a bunch of stuff we head for the Pacific and the Alaskan Peninsula.
We had originally intended to stay offshore to Sand Point on Popov Island in the Shumagin Islands, about 300 miles total, outrunning the approaching storms. However, a couple of the crew had talked with a longterm local (and owner of the Rat), Andy who had advised to follow the Deer Island Passage to Cook Inlet route described in the coast pilot. This route proceeds safely through the inside islands, blocking ocean swell and with reasonable depth and current. We’re in. We plot the course, exit the harbor, and head into the night moving towards Unimak Pass along with like 20 fishing boats…should be an interesting night…
