So we arrived at Kodiak. What an overwhelming place. Luxury houses, tourists, lots of signs and chaos. We dock in the harbor and are immediately aware that we are not ‘out’ anymore. The locals aren’t very friendly, everything is about tourism, and the town seems somewhat devoid of personality. We run errands, buy a few things, and then do what people do on a great sailing adventure. We go bowling of course.
In probably the most random point in the trip we find ourselves bowling a couple of games on a deserted alley with a 1990 electronic scoring system. I was winning both games going into the 10th frame only to have Josh bowl 5 strikes out of 6 balls in each 10th frame to win. Holy F***. Glad it wasn’t for money.
The most interesting part of Kodiak is the cannery. Basically, they had a factory ship for a cannery and decided to just build out the port around the ship. Now it’s more of a ship shaped building built into the land. Crazy, but kind of makes practical sense out here.
We go out to a nice dinner down the way and decide to hightail it out of Kodiak the next morning, even though the forecast is a little sporty out there…hopefully not too much so…in search of ‘away’ again.
